East Lothian is a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering an array of walking and cycling routes that weave through its picturesque and diverse landscapes.

Many of the paths, tracks and country roads go to or pass by vantage points offering views of the surrounding countryside and the stunning coastal scenery that surrounds East Lothian.

It is now possible to walk or cycle the length of the East Lothian coast, almost 73km from Edinburgh to the Borders on the fantastic John Muir Way.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their routes ahead, making use of local maps and leaflets that detail these trails and points of interest.

Walking and cycling trails around East Lothian

Should you fancy a climb, there is of course North Berwick Law, the large lump of volcanic rock that presides over the town (613ft high), although steep in places the views from the top are, most definitely, the best in the area.

Beyond the John Muir Way, you can explore highlights like the Pencaitland Railway Walk around Ormiston, a scenic woodland trail along disused railway line, perfect for cycling or moderately challenging walking.

For more adventurous hikers, the historical hill fort site of Traprain Law, east of Haddington provides rewarding climbs with panoramic views.

The Go East Lothian Trail is a popular cycling route, blending gravel tracks and quiet roads, suitable for families or avid cyclists. There are plenty of scenic spots to rest and enjoy the beaches and activities at the towns along the way.

Additionally, the Dirleton and Yellowcraig Circular offers a peaceful coastal experience, passing an ancient volcano, woodland and Dirleton Castle.

Whether you're seeking tranquillity by the sea, wildlife spotting in nature reserves, or adventure on a steep climb, East Lothian’s walking and cycling routes offer an enriching experience year-round.

For seasoned walkers looking for long routes, or those new to hiking or travelling with younger children seeking short trails, there are options to suit you. From cliff top to coastal, hillside to woodland, East Lothian has it all.
