Climbing North Berwick Law: A must-do East Lothian experience

A family adventure in changing weather

With free parking conveniently located at the foot of the Law, the climb begins gently, perfect for families and those prefering a gentle walk.

On our first attempt, we set off full of optimism with our two children, only for the heavens to open up just after we left the car park.

The rain quickly turned our adventure into a retreat, and we swapped hiking for a relaxing swim at the local swimming pool instead.

Sometimes, that’s the beauty of East Lothian, plans shift, but the experience remains just as enjoyable.

A second attempt at the law, a different perspective

Our second climb couldn’t have been more different. Sunshine greeted us at the base, but as we approached the summit, a thick fog rolled in.

The sweeping coastal views disappeared, replaced by an eerie stillness that gave the hill a completely new character.

At the top sits a rock inscribed with "Live for the moment", and a small building, partially veiled in mist, adding to the sense of mystery. 

It felt like stepping into another world, quiet, atmospheric, and unexpectedly magical.

Expect the unexpected

North Berwick Law doesn’t just offer views, it offers an experience that changes every time you visit.

Whether bathed in sunlight or wrapped in fog, each climb feels unique.

Beyond its shifting moods, the Law also carries a rich history. 

This volcanic hill has long served as a landmark for sailors navigating the Firth of Forth, its distinctive cone visible for miles on a clear day. 

At the summit stands a small stone structure, once a lookout point and later used during wartime for surveillance, alongside the remains of an old arch and the famous whale jawbone (a replica today), adding character and intrigue to the peak.

Together, these elements make the summit more than just a viewpoint, it’s a place where natural beauty and local heritage meet, often revealed in unexpected ways.
