East Lothian is the perfect base for a golf break near Edinburgh, with plenty of courses to play both in and around the city.
Firstly, the Silverknowes course, which offers views across the Firth of Forth to the Kingdom of Fife.
Golfers can ‘pay as you play’ with Edinburgh Leisure, a concept that has been in place at the course since the 1930s with the aim of encouraging local residents to play the game.
Murrayfield Golf Club is situated on Corstorphine Hill, one of Edinburgh’s 7 hills, and has spectacular views of the city’s skyline, as well as East Lothian and Fife.
Although this course is under 6,000 yards, it still offers a great challenge to golfers of all standards.
Players may also hear the roars of animals at Edinburgh Zoo, also located on the slopes of Corstorphine Hill.
Ravelston Golf Club can be found just around the corner and also provides panoramic views while you play.
This course is particularly special as it is believed to be one of James Braid’s earliest designs; he later went on to design renowned courses such as Gleneagles and Dalmahoy.
Another of Edinburgh’s 7 hills is Braid Hill, where we find Braid Hills Golf Course.
With a vista of the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh, this course invites golfers to play around the natural contours and native gorse bushes of the area.
Meanwhile, Craigmillar Golf Club, a short 10-minute drive away, offers a peaceful round of golf away from traffic noise; you may even spot some wildlife, such as deer, on the fairway.
Why not also pay a visit to the Royal Observatory after your round of golf here? This building is part of the University of Edinburgh and remains at the forefront of UK and world astronomy.
